Woodbine Entertainment Expands Horse Racing Coverage Using TVU RPS

“In the past, producing from our Toronto venue was extremely costly. But with TVU RPS, we’ve made use of our control rooms to showcase horse racing to a larger audience while keeping the budget in check,” said Tobin Munro, Manager, Broadcast Technical. “TVU RPS has also given us the opportunity to produce more shows, thanks to its versatility and cost-effectiveness.”

The Woodbine Entertainment Group produces a number of horse racing shows that are distributed on a major sports network. The company was looking for a way to send video from its main location at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto to its sister location Woodbine – Mohawk Park in Milton, where Woodbine’s production and playback studio was located. Since bringing a mobile production truck onsite for a half hour-long race would be incredibly complicated and costly, Woodbine needed to explore its options for more cost-effective ways to produce its shorter shows.

After testing the solution out, Woodbine decided on TVU Remote Production System (RPS). TVU RPS uses a standard Internet connection to send perfectly synchronized live video signals to a remote studio location for at-home/REMI production. It is a solution designed to leverage users’ existing studio infrastructures so that they can minimize the amount of equipment and number of crew members that they need to bring onsite.

By setting up a TVU RPS encoder at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, and a TVU RPS decoder at the Milton facility, Woodbine easily sent live footage from the tracks to the studio 50 km (31 mi) away for production. The final product would be pushed out to TSN, a major Canadian sports channel, that would distribute the live broadcast across the country. The company was able to achieve smooth and quick transmission of high-quality video without the overhead required for a truck or an air pack.
